Getting good results from the image converter

Two settings do almost all the work here: the output format and the quality target. Getting them right for the kind of image you have matters far more than any other option.

Resize before you set the quality

Reducing dimensions removes pixels outright and saves more than compression ever will. An image displayed at 800 pixels wide gains nothing from being exported at 3000.

Match the format to the content

Photographs belong in JPEG, WebP or AVIF. Screenshots, logos and anything with sharp text belong in PNG or lossless WebP, where lossy compression would leave visible fringing around the edges.

Calibrate on your most detailed image

In a batch, one setting applies to everything. Pick it using the busiest image in the set; the smoother ones will simply come out smaller than they needed to be.

Keep the originals

Lossy conversion cannot be undone. Convert copies and archive the sources, because the setting that suits today will not suit a redesign that displays images twice as large.
